SCHOOL & YOUTH PROGRAMMING

GREAT ART PROGRAM
Funded primarily, for the past 24 years, by The Mark and Kay Frew Memorial, this program is designed to stimulate interest, imagination, and a lasting appreciation of art to children in our elementary schools. Dedicated volunteers introduce fine works of art accompanied by excellent research materials for accurate presentations. Students are introduced to works by Michaelangelo, El Greco, Georgia O'Keefe, Edgar Degas, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollack, Edward Hopper, Pieter Breugel, Marc Chagall, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and many others. An annual trip to the Snite Museum of Art on the campus of Notre Dame is a popular field trip for the fifth grade students.

LIVE THEATRE EXPERIENCE
Sturgis Council of the Arts provides this opportunity for nearly 2,000 children thanks to partial funding by the Patricia Franks Endowment Fund for Students and the Dale E. Gray Endowment Fund for Live Entertainment as well as area parent advisory councils. The students witness first-hand performances by professional acting troupes. The kids have the opportunity to sit in the Sturges-Young Auditorium, listen to special sound affects, see dazzling lights and stage wizardry, and become involved in magical experiences they may otherwise not experience.

PARTNERS IN ART
This program is designed to recognize young artists and heighten community awareness of our students' artistic ability. The matted and framed artwork is on exhibit each October in the Flora Beck Gallery of the Sturges-Young Civic Center. The works of art are available for leasing to businesses, professional offices and patrons. Funds generated through leasing support this program.

PEN TO PAPER
This project is designed to encourage, promote and recognize the creative writing talents of our local students. Generously funded by the Sturgis Bank & Trust Company, the Pen To Paper publication is a collection of the best poems, short stories and essays. To preserve the creative integrity of our authors, the pieces are printed in the style and words as originally submitted by the writers.

AUTHOR PROGRAM
SCA endeavors to expand the cultural awareness and horizons of area children by providing interactive experiences with live authors and illustrators of children's books. It is the hope of the SCA that this program will enhance the existing efforts of Sturgis area educators as they implement language arts programs. The authors and illustrators have provided presentations in area schools ranging from whole school assemblies to small group activities. Past presenters include Patricia Polacco, David Small, Kathy-Jo Wargin and Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen.

Sturgis Bank & Trust Company is
a proud sponsor of our Partners In Art
and Author Program.
